Nagra

In 1951, Stefan Kudelski’s prized invention, the “NAGRA” (meaning “will record” in Polish) was revolutionary, delivering a portable audio tape recorder with exceptional specifications: light, compact, self-contained and portable, yet delivering high audio quality.

More than 60 years separate the first Nagra professional recorder from today’s devices. During the intervening period, Nagra Audio has witnessed dramatic changes in technology and yet still produces some of the finest commercial and audiophile equipment available today.

The reputation of Nagra equipment is firmly established among audio professionals. Whether in the television and cinema industries or among radio journalists, Nagras are always appreciated for their sound quality and reliability. Equipment such as the Nagra III,  4.2 and the Nagra IV-S Time Code are seen as benchmarks in terms of sound recording for cinema productions and have been used on film sets the world over. The performance of this equipment has been recognized with three Oscars® and an Emmy® Award.

Nagra’s audiophile reputation is tremendous, and they continue to combine cutting edge technology with the best elements of their historical expertise. All of us at Padood has long admired Nagra equipment. After we visited Romanel-sur-Lausanne our respect and admiration grew even further. Meeting Pascal, Matthieu, Philippe and the rest of their dynamic team, we knew we had found kindred spirits. We are honoured that Nagra has chosen us to represent them in the UK and Ireland.

Nagra HD DAC

“The Nagra HD DAC has excellent coherence from the deep, powerful bass to the unforced, grain-free treble. It has sublime detail and you’ll hear things in your music you didn’t know were on the recording.
We are duty bound to find a downside to any product, but in concluding the review of the Nagra HD DAC, I simply couldn’t find one. It represents a leap in digital audio performance that doesn’t happen that often.”

Nagra Classic DAC

The Nagra CLASSIC DAC derives most of its technology from the Nagra HD DAC which has so impressed audiophiles throughout the world, but has been developed to integrate fully with the CLASSIC range and retail at a lower price point.

With the identical digital input and conversion boards as the Nagra HD DAC, it is only in the analogue stage that the Nagra CLASSIC DAC differs. It produces the same “analogue” sound as its bigger brother which is considered to be the standard in the D/A market by which all other machines are judged.

“Nagra's Classic Amp is a sterling example for how to hone raw resolution without presenting it in an unnatural fashion…
…the Classic Amp wasn't a scaled-up MSA but a scaled-down HD Amp. That was pure fact, not fiction. This is a very ambitious rather big amp which is simply presented in a smallish casing to deceive with classy understatement…”
